JUNE 2015 NEWSLETTER

Hello

Geographic issues are what we thrive on. So when we see an article that appears to be written from one perspective, it is in our nature to encourage our students to look beyond it. When students are reading an article , help them learn how to gather and organize data by asking questions such as:  What is the source of the data? What is the intent of the data or information? Can I rely on the data or information provided or do I need to look further? A journalist or writer can gather all kinds of data and information but the challenge to the reader or student comes in determining how personal values and beliefs may have influenced the analysis of the information. It is important therefore to encourage students to apply the concepts of geographic perspective when they analyze information and when they question the source and intent of an article. An issue of great topical importance is energy. Two resources that you may find helpful when students are learning about energy issues are CG Education’s Energy Production and Transmission giant floor map and the Energy IQ website.
